WHO WE ARE

  • ABOUT US SLIDE SHOW (2023-2024):  link ]

We are a medium size troop in Burke, VA focusing on personal growth, leadership development, citizenship training, community service, and character building for our Scouts.

We have a strong group of Scouts supported by an energetic and engaged team of adult leaders and parents, many of whom are active or former military and Federal service. Our troop regularly earns the highest recognition for Boy Scout troop quality and District recognition for outstanding Scout and adult leaders.

Troop 1344 was chartered in the Patriot District of the National Capital Area Council on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2005, and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 176 in Springfield, Virginia.

We meet Monday nights 7 PM at Cherry Run Elementary School (occasionally at Burke United Methodist Church).

Save the Dates -- Mulch Spreading Fundraiser Final Dates -- Sat & Sun, APR 6 & 7 (Days 2 & 3)

Posted on Mar 26 2024 - 6:57pm

Many thanks to the Scouts and parents that helped out on Day 1 -- half a day on March 17.  We earned $1,140 in donations ($4.32 per bag), which was better than expected and higher than last year's record earning year!  We are on pace to surpass last year's $4,000 earnings.

However, we are only 1/4 of the way there, with Saturday, April 6 (Day 2) the most important day.  That is a full day, with the large houses (several over 100 bags, versus the max 40 we saw March 17) and half of the number of bags we have to spread.

So please sign up to help our final 2 days (especially April 6) -- registration will be open this weekend.  These funds are what the troop needs to operate (Scouts who volunteer keep 1/2 for future Scouting needs).

Interested in a BSA Virginia License Plate?

Posted on Mar 2 2024 - 1:07pm

Are you interested in obtaining a BSA license place from the Virginia DMV?  A specialty BSA license plate does not exist in Virginia.  Interested adult leaders our District and Council are seeking other interested adults who have this interest.  But first, 450 interested parties must commit to this in order for the DMV to create this plate.  See details here:  [ LINK ]

Blue Cards and Merit Badges Through the Parks Department

Posted on Feb 13 2024 - 11:55am

Troop 1344 Parents,

The Fairfax County Parks Department offers lots of classes where Scouts can earn merit badges.  This is a fantastic way to work towards advancement.  Most classes are a single session on a weekend with some degree of pre-work.  I highly encourage you to do some of these.  If you are not familiar, you can find these in a section of the Parktakes magazine or by searching "merit badge" online at:  [ LINK ]

Some merit badges require Scouts to bring a signed blue card with them.  Be sure to get one from me in advance if so!  To be clear, I'm flexible.  If the counselor just wants to do an electronic blue card, then you can forward that to me after the fact.  I'm not picky.  Just be sure to know before you go whether you are responsible for bringing a physical blue card.  I'm at most every Troop meeting and I'm happy to arrange for you to pick up one from my house if you suddenly realize you need it before the next meeting.

Have fun and keep scouting!

Merit Badge Coordinator

Congratulations to New Graduates of the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) Course -- Rhys Compton/ Alexander Luminati

Posted on Feb 2 2024 - 9:46pm

Congratulations to our 2 new NYLT graduates, Rhys and Alex!  Over 2 long weekends in January, they completed this intense and challenging hands-on leadership training program to learn leadership skills that will help them succeed in Scouting and in life.  This has prepared them well to seek future assignments as the troop's High Adventure Crew Leader, Troop Guide, and Senior Patrol Leader (or Assistant).

Their example has paved a bright path for Peyton Fu, Mitch Mrskos, and Matthew Samadder, who are taking the late June NYLT course.  This course is timed well to prepare them to seek future assignments as Patrol Leaders.

Please see the attached PDF flyer for more details about NYLT, staff opportunities, and available NYLT courses this summer.
